Eroxon Review

Updated 2026-10-02 · 3 min read · Sources linked in the text

Our verdict

Eroxon is the first FDA-authorized over-the-counter gel for erectile dysfunction, and it contains no drug. Trial results cleared the threshold for a clinically meaningful improvement, but there is far less evidence than for prescription PDE5 tablets, so it suits men who want a drug-free option more than men who want the best-studied one.

How we got 3.8

3.8
Evidence grade B (moderate evidence). FDA granted De Novo authorization (DEN220078) as the first over-the-counter ED gel; in its open-label pivotal study (no placebo group) it met the minimal clinically important improvement in erectile function at 24 weeks (PMID 39128025), but evidence is thinner than for prescription PDE5 tablets. A narrative review calls topical therapy an option for men who prefer an alternative to tablets (PMID 40356742), and a Delphi panel did not reach consensus on some Eroxon-specific statements (PMID 42696760).
±0.0
Practical adjustment. No prescription needed and no active drug ingredient, offset by less trial data than prescription options.

What Eroxon is

Eroxon is a non-medicated, alcohol-and-water (hydro-alcoholic) gel made by Futura Medical and sold in single-dose tubes. FDA authorized it in June 2023 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in adult men aged 22 and over, and called it the first over-the-counter gel for ED (FDA Roundup, June 13, 2023). It reached FDA as a medical device through the De Novo pathway (FDA De Novo record DEN220078), not as a drug.

FDA's description of how it works: the alcohol and water evaporate, creating a fast cooling effect on the head of the penis followed by a slower warming effect, which stimulates nerve endings and leads to an erection.

What the evidence shows

Eroxon was studied under the code name MED3000. A 2024 scoping review of topical ED treatments reported that MED3000 improved the erectile function domain score by 5.73 points at 24 weeks, above the 4-point minimal clinically important difference. The same review said its efficacy relative to current first-line therapies remains unclear PMID: 39128025. FDA's decision summary shows that figure is a change from baseline in 48 men using Eroxon in an open-label trial with no placebo group; the trial's tadalafil arm was exploratory and was not used for comparison (FDA decision summary, DEN220078). Our in-depth Eroxon review covers the trial design, its limits and the cost per use.

A 2025 narrative review concluded that topical therapies may be an effective alternative for men who need or prefer one; several of its authors disclosed advisory roles with Futura Medical (Eroxon's maker) or Haleon, and Haleon supported the manuscript PMID: 40356742. A 2026 expert consensus on where Eroxon fits started from the position that PDE5 tablets are the standard of care but do not work for every man PMID: 42696760. Because its efficacy relative to first-line therapies remains unclear PMID: 39128025, Eroxon gets an evidence grade of B here rather than A.

Eroxon vs prescription tablets

Sildenafil and tadalafil are FDA-approved prescription drugs with a much larger evidence base. They are not suitable for everyone: men who use nitrates must not take them (Viagra (sildenafil) — DailyMed Drug Label). Eroxon gives men another route that needs no prescription and contains no drug. If your main goal is the most reliable result, talk to a clinician about tablets first.

Who should buy it

Consider Eroxon if you want a drug-free, non-prescription option, or if you cannot take or prefer to avoid PDE5 tablets.

See a clinician first if ED is new, getting worse, or comes with chest pain, breathlessness, low desire or low energy. Our erectile dysfunction guide explains why ED can be an early warning of heart disease. If you want another drug-free option, compare a vacuum device such as the Encore Deluxe.

Pros

  • FDA De Novo authorization (DEN220078) as the first over-the-counter gel for erectile dysfunction
  • Non-medicated: no active drug ingredient
  • No prescription or clinic visit needed
  • Met the 4-point clinically meaningful threshold on erectile function scores at 24 weeks in one open-label trial arm of 48 men (no placebo group)

Cons

  • Much less trial data than prescription PDE5 tablets, and its efficacy relative to them is unclear
  • Only for men aged 22 and over
  • Single-use tubes, so the cost adds up with regular use
  • Buying it without a checkup can delay finding a cause such as heart disease

Frequently asked questions

Is Eroxon FDA approved?

Eroxon is a medical device, so it went through FDA's De Novo pathway rather than drug approval. FDA granted the De Novo request (DEN220078) in June 2023 and described it as the first over-the-counter gel intended to treat erectile dysfunction.

How does Eroxon work?

According to FDA, the alcohol and water in the gel evaporate after application, causing a quick cooling effect followed by a slower warming effect on the head of the penis. This stimulates nerve endings, which leads to an erection. It contains no drug.

Is Eroxon as good as Viagra?

That has not been shown. Eroxon improved erectile function scores enough to count as clinically meaningful in its open-label pivotal trial, but reviews note that its efficacy compared with first-line prescription treatments remains unclear. Prescription PDE5 tablets have a much larger body of evidence.

Who can use Eroxon?

FDA authorized it for adult men aged 22 and over. Follow the label directions. If ED is new or getting worse, see a clinician as well, because erectile dysfunction can be an early sign of cardiovascular disease.
